Crochet Bolero/shrug FO

Here it is, another crochet bolero/shrug, a japanese design.
I used 5 balls of Cannon crochet thread, size 8, and a size 2mm Tulip aluminum hook.
I modified the pattern only at the beginning, I started off with 22 chs less, thereby decreasing two motif patterns in the vertical row. I thought it was going to get too big. But now that its finished, I realized I should have followed the pattern exactly.

It looks perfectly fine looking at the front, but the style of this bolero is supposed to be a loose fit. The sleeves should be a little loose. And looking at the back, it would have been more flattering if the ruffles rested lower on the hips.
Or, I could have shortened it sideways, so the back would be slimmer and be consistent with the sleeves...oh well...I still like it so much, and might make another one ;)

  6. I like it-it reminds me of the one Angela Best (Lavonne) wrote where the seam is down the center of the bank.

    Looks fine to me!

We did not take up crochet in HS in UST, and I didn't really crochet much until I had kids ;)

  22. I would like to help you, Jinky, but its really hard to explain in words. I have different ways of understanding each japanese pattern, since they are not presented the same way each time. I also don't know the meaning of any japanese character, so I pay attention to every number that I see.
First you have to decide on the yarn and hook you will use. On the shrug that you made as an example in your blog, the hook used is size 8/0 or 5mm. As can be seen in the photo, the yarn used is a bit thick compared to Cannon thread.
You will start where the chains are in the diagram, in the example shrug, that the diagram on the lower right of the page. The starting chain is in the middle of the back. Work will proceed from side to side, measuring about 36cm as shown in the diagram. Adjust the number of pattern repeats, so you will have approx. 36 cm, or bigger if you are making a bigger size. (Maybe a good way to check is to measure around the shoulder and underarm). For me, 36cm is just enough.
Work half a back and one arm, the length of which will depend on the wearer. After making the one half, you will join to the starting chain and proceed to make the other half of the back and the other arm. Now you have a rectangle, and a basic shrug. You will connect the underarm, and sew up the sleeves. Then proceed to work for the collar and around the body, which is worked in rounds.

    HOpe this helps!
